1516 West Carroll is a hive of activity. Headquarters for 3 companies and 3 Not-For-Profits, there is a constant stream of activity. An existing 2-story brick office building and attached warehouse were strategically renovated to accommodate a rooftop farm, crop processing and distribution center. A new construction knuckle mediates between the warehouse, farm operations and the offices. The inherent logic of the existing structure was exploited to provide different growing opportunities for the farm without requiring extensive structural interventions. The versatility of Omni Ecosystems™ green roof system allowed the weights to be finely tuned to the structural capacities of the roofs.
Inside the building office spaces are kept compact and efficient but the shared public space provides collaborative meeting space. Views of the city and the working farm, coupled with a generous outdoor deck have meant the sunlit space has become a popular co-working site and even a wedding proposal. The existing flooring materials were preserved and the interior finishes are light touch elements balancing the raw exposed CMU and the suspended LED lights. Salvaged barn doors and interior living walls are the accent moments and literally enliven the space. The tight budget and fluctuating program at the start of project forced the team to test many combinations of program distribution. The final design has accommodated great expansion in 2 of the companies within the building. The flagship roof and crop processing area is a showcase for The Roof Crop and Omni Ecosystems and has directly led to commissions.
