The new Malcolm X campus is a series of interconnected buildings designed to interact with the surrounding neighborhood. Malcolm X College provides a 21st century face to the Chicago and rebrands itself as a cutting-edge collegiate health sciences institution. Providing an under-served community with a beacon of educational opportunity and public resources, the facility announces its presence on both Damon and Jackson and can be seen from the nearby expressway.
The 544,000 sf facility knits together cantilevered bars and an 8-story tower with connecting tissue of spaces. It’s designed to “meet students where they are” with a range of outreach and support services on the first two floors. A literal and metaphorical heart of the building includes a coffee shop, student services one-stop, cafeteria, student union, daycare center, library, and academic support services. As students progress through their academic journey, the facility components support academic milestones. Starting with general education requirements in the north wing and science labs in the south wing, students then move onto the upper floors of the virtual hospital tower to complete their programs and launch their careers. A dental clinic, meeting rooms and conference center are accessible to the community on the ground level.
The building design leverages transparency and a range of touch down spaces promoting idea-sharing, collaboration, group study and model academic behavior. The story of Malcolm X unfolds through dynamic interior graphics, site greenery embellishes the streetscape and a new urban entrance square welcomes all.
