Hub Group’s build-to-suit international headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois is a three-dimensional expression of the company’s progressive culture of transparency and collaboration. The 130,000-square-foot, four-story, LEED Gold facility manifests Hub Group’s business goals, brand, and commitment to sustainability in physical form.
The building’s elegance is derived from a deceptive simplicity that foregoes conventional building finishes to create an open and spacious design, expressing Hub Group’s emphasis on transparency and collaboration. The architect’s minimalist, streamlined design optimizes adjacencies and shapes spaces to facilitate teamwork amongst employees. At the same time, the high-performance glass curtain wall optimizes natural light while underscoring the client’s core value of transparency. By eliminating drop ceilings and revealing structural and mechanical systems, the architect increased the vertical dimension in the space and expressed transparency and openness, and expressed Hub Group’s brand by evoking an industrial feel aligned with the company’s transportation work. Similarly, the building’s steel frame is celebrated through unfinished columns and beams, and x-bracing, creating an open and airy work environment.
A sustainable, healthy workplace was of upmost importance to the client. Select sustainable features include a high-efficiency HVAC system, energy efficient lighting controls, and rain water harvesting. The project also includes underground parking, walking trails, and natural habitat landscaping. The emphasis on sustainable measures at all levels of the project optimizes integration of the building within its context, encouraging a healthy and sustainable workplace that exemplifies Hub Group’s brand.
