Reuse and re-purposing of an historic building is the ultimate act of sustainability. This coupled with an energy efficient envelope formed the basis of a sustainable design. A radiant concrete ground floor also provides a tempered living environment.
The greatest challenge was to maintain the historic façade features and integrate them into a livable floor plan. The plan maintains the spirit of the original engine house by placing the gallery kitchen and spiral stair in the “residual” zone of the hose tower and placing vertical circulation on the cross axis of the floor plan. These features enhance design decisions of this speculative real estate venture.
